London -The City St.Paul and the City London United Kingdom English To ramble is to walk wherever your curious feet happen to lead you, whether that's forcing yourself through a thorny bush and up over the crest of a mountain, or circling the perimeter of a metropolitan sewage works whose blank outlines on the map you've always found rather fascinating. Today, in broad outline, you're going to ramble the familiar beaten track taken by many a tourist but listen to off the beaten track info as we ramble into your ears of the heavenly towers and hellish pits of London's history, society and culture. And all the while an electronic eye, like something out of George Orwell's 1984, will be recording your progress. Yes you're now in one of the most monitored areas in the world and your movements will be caught on hundreds of cameras as you make your way from the high rise splendour of the city to narrow medieval streets of the east end. We are going to walk through the CITY. During this Audio Tour I am not referring to the city of London but to a square mile within London. This area is simply referred to as the CITY. This is the major financial capital of the world. The biggest banks and insurance offices of the world have an office here. They trade, loan, exchange, hedge billions of Euros, Yen and Dollars each day. A long time ago the beginning of the CITY was much humbler. It was a simple Roman trading post as you will find out during the tour. But as you ramble around remember that they drive on the right side of the road here, and not the wrong side like everyone else in the world. They do it because it's much easier to point a lance or a sword at someone charging at you if you don't have to lean over to the other side of your body to get a good swipe at them. As most people are right handed as opposed to wrong-handed it makes perfect sense to drive on the left and assume that the oncoming traffic might be the enemy. Good old-fashioned proper rules for good old-fashioned road-rage.

Great Discoveries "Personal Audio Guides" St. Mark's Basilica Venice Italy English St. Mark's Basilica has majestically dominated Venice's Piazza San Marco for over 900 years. It is unique for the wealth of its history and for the magnificence of its facade and interior. It was designed by an unknown Byzantine architect, who supposedly modeled it after the Apostoleion in Constantinople, giving it an opulent style with mosque-like onion shaped domes that clearly reflect the influence of the Orient. Some 8,000 square meters of mediaeval mosaics, made from gold, semi precious stones and Venetian glass, covers the walls, and cupolas. Countless numbers of pilgrims and tourists alike have been awestruck by the golden magnificence of this, the largest and most lavishly decorated 11th century church. The Basilica has been a very significant holy place since the arrival of the sacred mortal remains of St. Mark in 828 A.D. Legend provides that two Venetian merchants stole the bones from the saint's shrine in Alexandria and then smuggled them out of Egypt in a barrel of pork - an unclean meat to Muslims and therefore unlikely to be inspected. Whatever the actual means, the arrival of the bones was the occasion for the building of the first St Mark's in Venice. They lie there to this day, where the faithful continue to visit to express their devotion to the saint. This carefully researched tour guides you through this magnificent Cathedral as our professional narrator, accompanied by historically appropriate background music, describes the spectacular mosaics, the world famous golden Pala d'Oro and other significant treasures. Step back in history as you listen to enchanting stories of the ruling doges, the magnificent artists and of course the theft of St. Mark's bones. Great Discoveries "Personal Audio Guides" Scuola Grande di San Rocco (Confraternity of St. Roch) Venice Italy English Scuola Grande di San Rocco is a striking 16th century Renaissance building, which houses a unique and incredibly impressive museum. It is a rather small building but an absolute must for art lovers and a visit would be worthy of almost any walk. It moves above many other Venetian sites in terms of priority, so definitely make the time to stop in here. The word scuola is derived from Latin and it means corporation or guild. Scuola Grande di San Rocco was founded in 1478 as part of a network of religious confraternities set up in Venice to perform charitable acts. Generally, the first floor of a scuola was designated for religious functions while the second floors were generally used as meeting places. These second floor meeting rooms were sometimes ostentatious but more often exquisitely beautiful. Scuola Grande di San Rocco is one of the most important treasure chests of Venetian paintings, a shrine to the followers of Jacopo Tintoretto, and a dazzling monument to his work, holding the largest collection of his paintings anywhere. The walls and ceilings of the Great Upper Hall are completely covered with his canvasses, representing one of the most important picture cycles of art history. In 1630 a plague had struck Venice taking over a quarter of its citizens to early graves. In the midst of this horror, the Venetian Senate made a pact with God, Stop the plague and we will build a church to honor the Virgin Mary. The plague came to a sudden end, and the Senate set about honoring its promise by awarding a contract to an unknown 26 year-old Baldassare Longhena whose design caused much criticism. Great Discoveries "Personal Audio Guides" Basilica di Santa Maria Novella Florence Italy English Great Discoveries audio tour of Santa Maria Novella provides tourists with the most entertaining and informative way to visit one of the most picturesque churches in Florence. Its name, Novella, or new, stems the fact that it was built on the site of an earlier church Santa Maria delle Vigne. Construction started on the sumptuous new headquarters of the powerful Dominican Order in 1278 and was not completed until 1360, almost one hundred years later. The basilica's interior is magnificent, with arches in two colors leading gracefully toward the high altar. It is vast, lofty, illuminated by ample sunlight and more Gothic in feel than any other church in Florence. Its architects were not content with its sheer physical size alone so they created a further illusion of space using an ingenious trick to deceive ones eyes. Looking from the back of the church to the main alter the distance between the columns diminishes while the arches get lower and the floor gets higher thus creating a deceptive tunnel effect, a perspective illusion that makes the 100 meter nave seem even longer. The interior's architectural grandiosity is further enriched by the splendor of its artwork. Treasures aplenty fill the interior, a groundbreaking painting by Masaccio, a crucifix by Giotto and three major fresco cycles. This carefully researched tour guides you through the Basilica while our professional narrator accompanied by historically appropriate background music points out and describes the most significant works of art and other historic treasures. Throw down your guidebook and venture off to see and hear the stories behind this resplendent church and the Renaissance artists who created this gothic wonder. Great Discoveries "Personal Audio Guides" Baptistery of San Giovammi Florence Italy English Great Discoveries Audio Tour of the Baptistery of St. John will provide you with the most enjoyable and informative way to visit Florence Italy's oldest building. From the earliest times the Baptistery constituted the heart of citys spiritual life and was used for centuries to baptize every Florentine child, thus serving as a religious focus and a way of strengthening the allegiance of Florentines to the city of their birth. The Baptistery is a building that is beautiful to look at, both inside and out, a masterpiece of architecture whose beginnings date back to antiquity. Like many holy places in Europe, there is no way of telling exactly how long the Baptistery has been revered. The origins of the temple, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, are uncertain but according to local lore there has been some sort of shrine on this spot since ancient Roman times, a temple dedicated to Mars, the Roman god of war. From its Romanesque sheathing of green and white marble to its Mannerist statuary, from the Byzantine and medieval imprint of its mosaics, to the ambitious casting of its three spectacular sets of bronze doors, the Baptistery reflects Florence's growth in art, from the darkest of the dark ages through the Renaissance. This carefully researched tour guides you through this magnificent building as a professional narrator accompanied by historically appropriate background music points out and describes the most significant works of art done by some of the most hallowed names in Medieval and Renaissance Italian art. Step back in history as you listen to enchanting tales of the Baptistery, her treasures and of course Ghiberti's spectacular Gates of Paradise. Guides are recorded in easy to follow segments that are readily located on your iPod. This 36-minute, 4 track, audio tour is designed to work with an easy to read building diagram, with clearly numbered locations, which coordinate with the track numbers and descriptions displayed on your iPod.
Great Discoveries "Personal Audio Guides" Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria dell Fiore) Florence Italy English Great Discoveries Audio Tour provides the most enjoyable and informative way to visit, Florence's spectacular Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Duomo. A lavishly decorated poem in stone, who's magnificent dome sores in triumph above the clutter of Florence's city streets. The Cathedral is one of the largest buildings in all of Christendom, exceeded only by St. Peter's in Rome, St. Paul's in London, and the Duomo in Milan. A much smaller 7th century church, Santa Reparata once stood on this very spot, but by the 13th century Florence, one of the most prosperous and wealthiest cities in the entire civilized world, was one of the last medieval cities to plan a great cathedral. So in 1294, the Council elected to build a new cathedral and decreed: It will be so magnificent in size and beauty as to surpass anything built by the Greeks and Romans. Considering that all the acts and works of a people who boast of an illustrious origin should bear the character of grandeur and wisdom, we order Arnolfo, director of the works of our commune, to make the model, or a design of the building, which shall replace the church of Santa Reparata. It shall display such magnificence that no industry, nor human power, shall surpass it. This carefully researched tour guides you through this magnificent Cathedral as a professional narrator, accompanied by historically appropriate background music, points out and describes the Cathedrals wondrous architecture and her most significant works of art. Step back in history as you listen to enchanting tales of the Duomo, her magnificent treasures and of course Brunelleschi's grandiose dome and Giotto's famous Campanile. Guides are recorded in easy to follow segments that are readily located on your MP3 player. This 2 hour & 3 minute, 20 track, audio tour is designed to work with an easy to read building diagram, with clearly numbered locations, which coordinate with the track numbers and descriptions displayed on your player.
